George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest

Contest Information

The SAR invites all U.S. high school students (grades 9–12) to participate in this annual contest. Students may attend public, private, parochial, or home schools.


Essay Requirements

  • 800–1,200 words in length
  • Original work focused on an event, person, philosophy, or ideal of the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the U.S. Constitution
  • Judged on historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar, and documentation


Contest Structure

  • Conducted in three phases: local chapter → state society → national level
  • Entries must go through the student’s local SAR chapter (or state society if no local chapter participates)
  • Only one entry per student per contest year
