Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest

Additional Information

Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest

The SAR Middle School Contest is to create a tri-fold brochure out of a standard 8 ½” x 11″ piece of paper. The brochure must conform to the contest theme, which is one of the nine foundational documents of the United States, chosen by the student.

The brochure will be judged on Content, Creativity, and Correctness. Highest value is placed on:

  • Personally drawn artwork and student-authored text
  • Less value is placed on cut-and-paste work from books, magazines, or the Internet
  • The use of software tools (including for artwork) is allowed

Local, State, and National Prizes

  • Local Chapter and State prizes vary by state and chapter
  • National prize awards are established each year
  • The intent of the NSSAR and the Americanism Committee is to increase national cash prizes to approach parity with other contests for this age group
  • The official name of the contest is the Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest

How Does the Contest Work?

The contest has three levels:

  1. Local Chapter Level – first competition level, sponsored by a local SAR Chapter
  2. State Level – chapter winners advance to state competition
  3. National Level – first-place state winner advances to compete for national prizes

Important Notes:

  • All entries begin at the local Chapter level
  • Schools, classes, or youth groups may hold their own competition, but only one winner can be submitted to the local Chapter
  • Individual students do not submit directly to a Chapter
  • All entries must go through a school, scouting organization, or C.A.R. Society
  • Home school submissions should go through their home school association
  • Students must participate in a Chapter within their local area

Who Can Enter?

The SAR Brochure Contest is open to:

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle school students in public, private, and home schools

Entry Guidelines:

  • If school systems are participating, students enter through their school system
  • If schools are not participating, students may enter through:
    • Scouting organizations
    • C.A.R. (Children of the American Revolution)
  • Each student may submit only one brochure per year
  • Group entries are not allowed – brochures must be created by individual students
  • Students may enter during any middle school year

The contest is designed to support educational efforts in public, private, and home schools where the Revolutionary period is taught.

How Do I Get Started?

  • Ask your teacher, C.A.R., or scouting adult leader to supervise the contest
  • Ask them to contact a local SAR Chapter for deadlines and guidelines
  • Make sure your brochure conforms to SAR contest rules
  • Deadlines vary among Chapters – your teacher or adult leader must confirm the correct deadline with your local SAR Chapter

Deadline Information

  • All entries must be submitted by the local Chapter deadline
  • Deadlines vary by Chapter – check with your local SAR Chapter for details
  • Do not be confused by state or national deadlines listed online; only your local Chapter deadline matters for submission

How Will I Be Judged?

Brochures will be judged on:

  • Content
  • Creativity
  • Correctness

Additional judging considerations:

  • Highest scores are given for student-created artwork and original writing
  • Use of outside sources (books, magazines, Internet) is permitted but valued less
  • Use of technology/software tools (including for art) is permissible

What Is the Theme?

The SAR Brochure Contest theme is based on one of nine Foundational Documents of the United States:

  • Articles of Association of 1774
  • Virginia Declaration of Rights (1776)
  • Declaration of Independence (1776)
  • Articles of Confederation (1777–1781)
  • General Washington’s Resignation as Commander of the Continental Army (1783)
  • U.S. Constitution (1787)
  • Federalist Papers (1788)
  • Bill of Rights (1791)
  • President Washington’s Farewell Address (1796)

250th Anniversary Themes

Starting in the 2023–2024 school year and continuing for the next ten years, brochures may also focus on 250th anniversary events of the Revolutionary period:

  • 1773–2023 The Boston Tea Party
  • 1774–2024 The First Continental Congress
  • 1775–2025 The Battles of Lexington and Concord
  • 1776–2026 The Battle of Princeton and Valley Forge

  • 1781–2031 Siege of Yorktown
  • 1782–2032 Battle of Blue Licks
  • 1783–2033 Treaty of Paris
