The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution honors our Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our Country.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is a patriotic, lineage-based organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of those who fought for American independence. We aim to uphold American freedom, encourage patriotism, and promote national pride. In 1876, during the centennial celebration of the Declaration of Independence, descendants of patriots in San Francisco founded the Sons of Revolutionary Sires, a society honoring those who sacrificed for liberty.
This group evolved into the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), officially organized on April 30, 1889, the centennial of George Washington’s inauguration. The SAR is composed of descendants of patriots who signed the Declaration, fought in the Revolution, served in the Continental Congress, or otherwise supported the cause of independence.
Chartered by Congress in 1906 and signed by President Theodore Roosevelt—a member of the Empire State Society SAR—the organization was federally recognized under Title 36 of the U.S. Code. State societies and local chapters continue the mission of education, remembrance, and national service.
Our chapter is committed to fostering patriotism through active service and remembrance. We honor veterans, observe patriotic holidays, promote respect for the American flag, and mark the graves of Revolutionary War patriots to ensure their legacy is never forgotten. Through these efforts, we uphold the enduring values of liberty, sacrifice, and national pride.
The Sons of the American Revolution proudly supports educational initiatives that promote citizenship, leadership, and patriotism. Our programs include partnerships with Boy Scouts, recognition of outstanding JROTC cadets, and a variety of youth contests—such as essay, oration, and poster competitions—designed to engage students in the history and ideals of the American Revolution.
We work to preserve and honor the legacy of the American Revolution by identifying and marking historic sites connected to the struggle for independence. Through the placement of plaques, grave markers, and public ceremonies, we help ensure that the landmarks and stories of the Revolution remain visible and meaningful for future generations.
